Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

What does it take to provide the best care to our members, who span cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and religions? First, a continued commitment to supporting and uplifting the many diverse voices and experiences that make Premise unique. We understand that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are integral to who we are as a company and how we thrive in delivering whole-person care.

A place for everyone.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging have always been central to Premise’s mission of helping people get, stay, and be well. In 2020, we formalized our commitment with the creation of a dedicated DEIB department and DEIB council. We are proud to not only continue this work, but to grow and expand our programming.

To create workspaces where individuals feel like valued members of the team, we provide proactive support, including training, educational opportunities, and team member resource groups. Our organization also is actively participating in the DEIB efforts of our clients through consultative support, supplier diversity, and the provision of tailored programming and care needs.

You belong.

Our inclusive culture allows everyone to bring their true, authentic self to work every day. When our team members are free to be themselves, so are our members.

Who you are is how we care.

Creating diverse, equitable care spaces ensures our millions of members get the care they need. Through focused recruiting efforts, we strive to hire diverse talent because we believe our care teams should reflect the member populations they’re caring for.

As part of our approach to training, team members complete a robust education series that teaches them best practices in delivering culturally competent care. By providing the care our members need and deserve, Premise is playing a part in advancing health equity in communities across the country.

Our commitment.

Our mission for the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging program at Premise Health is to continue to establish our organization as an industry leader in creating diverse work and care spaces that value, honor, respect, and protect difference. We are committed to the provision of culturally humble and aware, socially responsible, just, and equitable care for leading organizations and their people.

What it’s like to work in inclusive spaces.

Premise’s commitment to DEIB is one of the many reasons I’m proud to say I work for Premise Health. Personally, I know I can bring my full authentic self to work and that my uniqueness will be celebrated. In my leadership position, I’m empowered to fully support my team, celebrate our differences, and encourage a healthy work-life balance. Our team members are humans first, titles second. As clinical providers, learning who our patients are and what is important to them helps us provide the best care possible and make every patient feel safe and welcome.

– Kayti Lapensee

One of the reasons for Premise Health’s success is our dedication and commitment to an inclusive culture that values the unique contributions of each team member at all levels. DEIB helps bring everyone in the company together, regardless of our physical location. I love how the team member resource groups weave all of us together, wherever we may call home.

– Sharon Blaze

I’ve spent the last 15 years in the medical field, and after starting to work at Premise Health, I’ve come to better understand the importance of DEIB. To me, it means taking the time to ensure all our members, team members, and vendors are welcomed and accepted. It’s this lifestyle of inclusion that helps people better understand each other and their needs.

– Bruce Shannon

I come from a community that is often overlooked, and many people don’t know how interwoven we are into the fabric of contemporary America. The DEIB programs at Premise are a wonderful platform for all of us to share our cultures, historical legacies, struggles, and positive advancements. It provides a space to cross pollinate all the good things that bring us together as a greater community and build upon our progress as a collective toward a better tomorrow.

– Dr. AK Misra

Driving our progress.

The Premise DEIB council has been foundational in all we’ve accomplished in our journey. What was once a work group is now a think tank that keeps us on track and holds our organization accountable. Made up of volunteer team members from across disciplines, the group develops strategies to strengthen how we support team members, advises on policy changes, and presents recommendations directly to the CEO that help advance Premise as a leader in the field.

Learning and growing together.

Growth only happens when the time and space is created for it. Team members are encouraged to join one of our peer-led team member resource groups to network, hear new ideas and solutions, and create opportunities for career development. They have the option to join as a group member or as an ally supporting their peers. Membership across groups has grown to over 1,400, with team members embracing the opportunity to learn and grow with one another.

Passionate about positive change.

DEIB Ambassadors are volunteers from across the company who serve as champions, advocates, and educators for all things related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. These volunteers take part in enhanced learning focused on the importance of DEIB in the workplace and Premise’s commitment, and then share those learnings with other team members. Whether giving an overview of our program in a staff meeting or guiding a work group through resource materials, our ambassadors are an essential part of helping us learn and grow together.

Embracing education.

Creating a diverse and inclusive culture isn’t something we can do on our own. To help us along our journey, we equip team members with a variety of educational resources. Our Gateway Series allows everyone to explore a new identity-based observance or tradition each month, while Fireside Chats provide an outlet for people to share and receive stories. Premise also offers a robust offering of toolkits, guides, and trainings to help team members continue building on their knowledge.

An ongoing journey.

Our team members are our greatest asset, and their feedback validates that we’re on the right path. However, there is always room to grow, and we will always seek out opportunities to move forward toward discovery and action.
